What Would A Father’s Day Card To God Look Like?
The stores are filled with people rushing to buy Father’s Day cards for their earthly fathers. If you were to send one to God, your heavenly Father, what would it look like? What would you say to Him?
You might start with thanking Him for adopting you into His family. There was no reason He had to do this. It’s hard to stop in Eph. 1 as you start to read: “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
You could add to this Romans 8 which says: “12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”
How could you adequately express thanksgiving to God for the rich mercies and grace He has lavished upon you? Even if it were possible for you to enlist the help of the moon and stars, wait, they also remind us of His love to us in Psalm 8:“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, 7all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
8the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.”
What if you would use the heavens to write on? Even they would not be a blank sheet as we see in Psalm 19: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” There would not be enough space, despite the incomprehensible vastness.
If you would make a vocal card, you would have to put in nature as well for they are already doing so: “Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord.”
As a matter of fact, anything you would use to make the card or give to God would be already His. As Psalm 50 notes: “For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.”
God doesn’t call us to make a card for Him. He is complete and does not need the praise of mankind. Yet, He has created us for His glory and allowed us to express our praise and adoration in ways different from the rest of creation. Psalm 34 speaks of us making our lives a “living card” in: “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!”
It’s sad that the rest of creation has no problem glorifying God while so many of mankind refuse to do so. You can’t read the Bible and not pick up on the praise and exaltation in it of our Father. May our lives reflect that every day!
